Key Rules for Claiming HRA Exemption in India

When is Landlord PAN Mandatory?

Under CBDT circulars, if your total annual rent paid exceeds ₹1,00,000 per year (or ₹8,333/month), submitting your landlord’s PAN to your employer is legally mandatory to claim HRA tax exemption.

When is a Revenue Stamp Required?

Under the Indian Stamp Act, a Re. 1 revenue stamp is legally required only if the rent is paid in cash exceeding ₹5,000 per receipt. For electronic bank transfers, UPI, or cheques, revenue stamps are optional but widely preferred by corporate HR portals.
